Lower Great Southern Tennis Association hosts successful Junior Singles Championships at Lawley Park

The annual Lower Great Southern Tennis Association’s Junior Singles Championship were a smash hit, with 22 kids taking part at Lawley Park Tennis Club on Sunday. Most of the players came from Albany but there was a strong contingent from Tenterden and players from Borden, Denmark and Kendenup. The event was split up into three categories playing off in round robin qualifications and the player who won the most games throughout the day was declared the overall winner. There was no red group this year, while the green group was split into boys and girls but the yellow and orange group played together. The green and yellow group comprised players aged 9-14 and the orange group was for ages 7-8. Denby Sharpe, a member of Lawley Park and Tenterden, went through the day undefeated to win the yellow ball group over Lawley Park’s Bryce Galos. Tenterden’s Hugo Riggall had a great day on court and claimed the honours in the green ball boys group, closely followed by Asher Craig from Lawley Park. There were plenty of close matches in the green ball girls group, with Adalyn Sharpe from Lawley Park narrowly edging out Tenterden’s Olivia Riggall in a tiebreak. The orange ball group was a very close affair, with Maggie O’Meehan from Borden taking the honours, but she needed a match tiebreak to defeat Tenterden’s Clancy Beech. Tournament director Alex Riggall said great support helped the event run smoothly. “A big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for their catering and umpiring efforts,” she said. “We really appreciate it and it made for a fun day for all the kids competing in the tournament.”
