Local farmers, fishers and chefs join forces for Taste Great Southern closing event

Taste Great Southern is set to go out with a bang on Sunday next week with an event that celebrates the people who farm, catch and prepare the region’s culinary riches. The Farmer, The Fisherman and The Chef will run from 5pm-10pm on May 15 at the Albany Boatshed, bringing the Great Southern’s finest produce from the sea and paddock to the table. Local chefs will put their spin on produce from Bred Co, Truffle Hill, Society Chutney, Magic Marron, Leeuwin Coast, Dirty Clean Food, Handasyde Strawberries, Truffle Hill, Albany Seafoods, Great Southern Seafoods, Green Range Lamb and Dellendale Creamery. Food will be prepared by the likes of Rockpool chef Brendan Owens, Ocean and Paddock’s Trenton Brennan and Jago, Looped Cafe’s Kendell Smith, Albany Seafoods’ Robert Edmunds and Albany TAFE’s Mark Crabtree. Ocean and Paddock owner Mr Brennan said the event would be an opportunity for the community to hear the stories of the region’s produce from the people who know it best. “We are going to take the idea of Taste Great Southern and take it back to the roots,” he said. “First and foremost we will showcase the fishermen and the growers — the people who are getting up at 5am, seven days a week — and it will be cooked by local chefs, they are the ones who truly know and cook this produce. “We don’t need a Rick Stein or a Jamie Oliver, we have the chefs that live, breathe and cook the produce of the Great Southern. “The last two years have been extremely challenging for our community. This is a chance for us to all come together and celebrate the Great Southern and everything that makes it the most amazing place in the world to live.” Albany Seafoods managing director Bryn Westerberg said taking part in the event was another chance to get people enjoying the underused species caught in Albany waters. “There are a lot of species caught in Albany, having it so close and available all year round is pretty special,” he said.
