Narrikup Netball Club will wear specially designed bibs in the Albany Netball Association’s inaugural NAIDOC Round this weekend.

The bibs were designed by local artist Brianna Williams and have significant meaning to the Narrikup club.

Narrikup president Tanya McLennan said a discussion with fundraising co-ordinator Jorja Camp helped get the idea off the ground.

“It was just a general discussion between myself and Jorja,” she said.

“We decided to get a local artist to design some bibs for us and Jorja tracked down Brianna and we went from there.

“The idea about NAIDOC Round is something the ANA put out there and Netball WA have been promoting it and we decided to jump on board with the idea.

“We have a number of Indigenous girls at the club and we like to be inclusive and take a step forward,” McLennan said.

Narrikup 1 will clash with Magpies 1 at 2.30pm while Narrikup 2 will face Railways 1 at 4pm in the A1 competition.

“The ANA will be providing NAIDOC balls for each court and the round was set up by them,” she said.

“We just decided to make it a little bit extra special by getting bibs made up.”

Williams said she felt privileged to create the design, with all 16 Narrikup teams wearing the bibs this weekend.

“Narrikup approached me to design some bibs and I’m pretty proud to be involved,” she said.

“The main symbol in the middle represents the club and the team sitting around a campfire.

“The smaller campfires on the edge are the other clubs and the footprints are the team coming to play Narrikup.

“The handprints are representing all the volunteers and people that do work in the club.

“I have always painted, my mum and family painted so I guess it’s in my blood.”

Players will return to the courts in round 10 of the ANA after a few weeks off.
