Lions big man racks up the early wins, Edwards strong in Swans loss and Lloyd makes his West Coast WAFL debut

Denmark-Walpole junior Kalin Lane has enjoyed a winning start to the new season, part of Brisbane’s undefeated run in the VFL competition. Lane, who was picked up by the Lions in the 2021 mid-season draft, has played in the first four games of the season that have all been wins for their VFL side. The Lions ran out 19-point winners against Southport in round four at Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday and Lane finished with 29 hit-outs. The 205cm ruckman also collected 11 disposals, took four marks and laid three tackles as the Lions made it four wins on the trot. Lane is averaging 23.5 hit-outs per game this season and kicked one goal in their round two win over the Footscray Bulldogs. A 21-year-old former State basketballer, Lane last year re-signed with the Lions until the end of 2024. The Lions and the Casey Demons are the two unbeaten teams in the VFL competition. At Gather Round in Adelaide, ex-Railways midfielder Jordan Clark was part of Fremantle’s second win of the season. Clark had 15 touches, three marks, three tackles, four intercepts and 291m gained in a sturdy defensive performance as the Dockers downed Gold Coast by 10 points on Friday at Norwood Oval. On Thursday night North Albany product Mitch McGovern was a late withdrawal from Carlton’s side with a calf injury. McGovern was replaced just minutes before the opening bounce at Adelaide Oval after calf tightness in the warm-up. The Blues were thumped by 56 points at the hands of Adelaide in the end. Mt Barker’s Arthur Jones is still chasing his first AFL goal after the exciting small forward went without a score in the Western Bulldogs 14-point defeat to Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night. Jones had five possessions and laid four tackles in the loss. Former Royals forward Tom Edwards was named in Swan Districts’ best players as they went down to East Fremantle in round two of the WAFL competition on Saturday. Edwards collected 13 disposals, took seven marks and kicked a goal in the four-point league defeat at Steel Blue Oval. Borden’s Anthony Davis was a stand-out for Claremont in their league demolition of South Fremantle at Revo Fitness Stadium on Saturday. Davis finished with 21 possessions and nine marks in the 48-point victory while North Albany junior Talon Delacey kicked two goals up front. Ongerup-raised footballer Angus Dewar was in Subiaco’s best players after 15 touches, four tackles and two inside 50s in their loss to East Perth. North Albany’s Alex Pearce gathered 18 disposals, eight marks and kicked a goal for East Perth in the 23-point league win at Leederville Oval. Rhett Lloyd, who hails from North Albany, made his league debut for West Coast. The 24-year-old played his first game for the club and had nine touches, three marks and three tackles but his side were trounced by 169 points.
