New lights along the Denmark airstrip are set to drastically save power and boost safety.

The Shire of Denmark secured about $26,000 last year to fund the upgrade, as part of a Federal Government scheme to support regional airports to undertake essential works.

The funding has allowed aged lighting fixtures flanking the runway off Wrightson Road to be replaced with modern LED lamps.

The upgrades are expected to slash power use by up to 90 per cent and increase vital visibility for local pilots and the Royal Flying Doctor Service using the runway.

Both windsocks, used by pilots to indicate wind direction, are also fully lit to boost the safety of evening flights.

Shire chief executive David Schober thanked the Denmark Airport Association for lending their technical expertise to install the new upgrades.

“The new runway lighting and the airport as a whole present exceptionally well and is a credit to the Denmark Airport Association,” he said.
