LGSHA 2024: Goals galore for Spencer Park Dark who beat sister team Light in Kellie York Memorial fixture

Spencer Park Dark recaptured the Kellie York Memorial Shield after a strong performance over sister team Spencer Park Light on Saturday afternoon. The Kellie York Memorial is played between the two women’s B-grade teams as part of the Lower Great Southern Hockey Association’s Cancer Awareness Round. The memorial honours former Spencer Park player Kellie York, who died after a battle with breast cancer in 2008. Last year Light claimed their first win in the match since 2017 but Dark hit back this year, to continue their recent dominance of the special fixture. A double to Larissa Rechichi was the catalyst for Dark’s delight while goals from Claire Hard and Denise Famlonga sealed the 4-1 result. Light were able to pinch a goal back through Emma Russell in the final quarter but it was in vain as they fell to a second loss of the season. The two Spencer Park teams sit one-two on the ladder heading into the final three rounds of the season. Dark is top of the ladder with 26 points, having lost just one game, while Light is second on 20 points. North Albany is third with 19 points and Griffins round out the top four with 18 points. Meanwhile in the men’s B-grade an exciting final couple of weeks looms as the top-three teams are separated by just four points. North Albany sits on top with 27 points but are closely followed by Manypeaks (25) and Griffins (23) in the chase for a top-two finish. Mt Barker is fourth with 19 and the fifth-placed Vikings’ season remains alive with 13 points.
