LGSHA 2023: Spencer Park Light net three goals to beat Spencer Park Dark in Kellie York Memorial Game

Spencer Park Light emerged victorious after an impressive display against sister team Spencer Park Dark in the annual Kellie York Memorial Game on Saturday. The game is played every year between the women’s B-grade teams as part of the Lower Great Southern Hockey Association’s Cancer Awareness Round. The memorial honours former Spencer Park player Kellie York, who died after a battle with breast cancer in 2008. A double to Emma Thompson guided Light to a 3-0 victory in the round 11 fixture. Thompson scored twice while Monique MacKenzie also found the back of the net as Light recorded their sixth win of the season. All three goals came in the third term after a strong defensive display from Dark in the opening half left scores tied at half time. MacKenzie and Thompson played leading hands for Light and teammate Chloe Whitfort was also influential as their side claimed their first memorial victory since 2017. Dark were best served by Zoe Skinner, Stella Gordon and Laura Panton but they fell to a fourth loss of 2023. The result helped Light move within one point of the second placed Dark in the standings. Mt Barker Red are the ladder leaders in the B-grade competition, having lost only one game to sit clear on top with 28 points. In the fight for a finals spot Dark are next with 19 followed by Light on 18 while North Albany (14 points) and Vikings (12) are also in contention.
