Leary’s defence prowess on show at nationals

Albany’s Matt Leary shone while representing WA Country at the Under-18 Junior Championships in Townsville, Queensland last month.

The star guard averaged 13.8 points and 6.8 rebounds a game across the six regular fixtures before scoring 17 points in the play-off for sixth position with Northern Territory.

Leary’s defensive prowess was on show as he averaged the most steals of any player in the competition with 3.5 steals a game along with 1.67 assists.

WA Country lost all six games in the pool matches, placing them 7th in Pool B.

Leary poured in 19 points in the side’s loss to Queensland North also adding 9 rebounds and 3 assists.

In the final WA Country defeated NT 100-89 as Leary finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists.

Leary’s field goal percentage for the tournament was 34.41 per cent while his three-point shooting percentage was 20 per cent.
