Jury shown confronting CCTV footage of Stirling Terrace brawl in district court trial of Albany brothers

Confronting CCTV footage of the violent Stirling Terrace brawl in 2021 has been played out in court, showing the moment the fight broke out as part of evidence in the trial of two Albany men. Brothers Anthony Willis Coyne, 29, and Joel Derek Coyne, 33 are on trial in the Albany District Court for their part in the fight after both pleaded not guilty. The pair face charges of endangering life, health or safety of a person and being armed or pretending to be armed in a way that may cause fear. The shocking melee between two groups broke out in the Albany CBD in the early hours of July 18, 2021 and ended when former WAFL star Russell Wynne was struck by a vehicle. Mr Wynne has been left unable to walk or talk and Paul Trymain Maxton was jailed for three years and two months in November last year after being found guilty of driving the car into Mr Wynne. Monday was day six of the trial of the Coyne brothers as prosecution and defence lawyers reviewed CCTV footage and weapons found in the boot of a white Honda Sedan belonging to Britney Anne Ford. Detective Senior Constable Christopher Hitchin took to the stand in court on Monday, testifying that police initially believed the incident would be a homicide. The court was shown CCTV footage from different angles along Stirling Terrace as the fight erupted, including the horrifying moment the white sedan swerved and hit Russell Wynne. Ford was previously jailed for 18 months for her part in the brawl. On Friday another police witness, Senior Constable Jillian Cartmell, who attended the scene about 1.20am following the brawl, testified that she witnessed Mr Wynne lying on the road injured. About 2am the police witness attended Albany Health Campus where she took photos of Joel Coyne in a blue singlet and jeans, and Anthony Coyne in a green shirt and jeans while they were in the emergency department. The court was shown images of two weapons taken from the boot of a maroon car that was seen on the night. One weapon was about 80cm in length, while the other was a slightly curved blade around 70cm long. The brawl on Stirling Terrace involved a group of about 20 people and six people were hit with serious charges in the aftermath. The incident left two men seriously injured, weapons strewn across the ground and the community reeling. Joel Coyne presented to Albany Police Station upon request and subsequently arrested and charged on August 3, 2021. Anthony Coyne was similarly arrested and charged on August 5, 2021.
