Julian Murphy set to take the reigns at Shire of Plantagenet, announces resignation from Shire of Katanning

One Great Southern local government’s search for a new chief executive has signalled the start of a similar search for another shire in the region. The Shire of Plantagenet announced on Friday that its council had endorsed the appointment of Shire of Katanning chief executive officer Julian Murphy as its new leader. Mr Murphy has more than 26 years experience working in the local government sector and has been at the helm of the Shire of Katanning since 2015. He said he was looking forward to the opportunity at the Shire of Plantagenet and was excited by the possibilities in his new position. “Plantagenet is well-placed for the future with its location, natural beauty, strong community and diverse economic base,” he said. “I am keen to progress new initiatives as well as deliver strong core services.” “I am looking forward to working with the council, Shire team and the community to deliver the best possible outcomes for Plantagenet.” Plantagenet Shire president Chris Pavlovich said Mr Murphy would commence in the role on September 4. “The council extends a warm welcome to Mr Murphy,” Cr Pavlovich said. “He has a long history of steering local governments and seizing opportunities to develop economic growth, and we look forward to him joining the Shire.” Mr Murphy will take the reigns from Shire of Plantagenet interim chief executive Gary Clark, who stepped into the role following the end of Cameron Wood’s two-year tenure in the position. In a statement announcing his resignation, Mr Murphy thanked the shire of Katanning, its staff and council for its support over the past eight years. “A great deal has been achieved by the Shire of Katanning in the past eight years through the hard work of both council and the administration,” he said. “I am proud of the solid position that we have established for the Shire of Katanning, and I believe that this is an appropriate time for me to seek new challenges.” Katanning shire president Liz Guidera said Mr Murphy had overseen a period of extensive capital growth aimed at meeting the needs of current and future residents. “Julian has successfully led the organisation over this time and worked collaboratively with council, community, staff and our regional neighbours,” he said. “He provided essential leadership and support during the Katanning fire and floods”.
