Former Australian paceman Mitchell Johnson, pictured, has been announced as the keynote speaker for the 2018 Wellington and Reeves Albany Sportsperson of the Year Awards next month.

The gala presentation and dinner will be held at Centennial Stadium on Thursday, May 30, to recognise Albany’s sporting stars of 2018. The awards, sponsored by the Albany Advertiser, are in their 46th year of recognising the outstanding performance and overall contribution of local athletes to their sports.

Winners will be announced in junior, senior and veteran categories before an overall winner is announced.

Left-armer Johnson, who retired from all forms of cricket last year after a glittering career, said he was looking forward to providing insight into being a professional athlete.

“I’m delighted to be part of the Albany Sportsperson of the Year Awards, which have a long history of recognising the outstanding sporting achievements by local athletes,” Johnson said.

“I can’t wait to get down and be part of the gala function and look forward to getting to know some of Albany’s elite sportspeople.

“Hopefully I can pass on some valuable information from my time as a professional athlete to assist any aspiring Albany athletes who are dreaming of reaching the highest level in their chosen sport.”

Tickets go on sale on May 1 from Paperbark Merchants for $70.
