Jo Morgan first Great Southern nurse to complete midwifery scholarship program & achieving her dream

An Albany midwife who is part of the first cohort of graduates from a scholarship upskill program said she would not have been able to pursue her true passion without it. Jo Morgan is one of 15 graduates from the inaugural class of the State Government’s program, which puts registered nurses through an 18-month graduate diploma of midwifery. Run by the University of Notre Dame, the course costs $36,699 a year, which the scholarship covers. Ms Morgan said that without the flexible working arrangements, fully funded course fees and placement opportunities of the scholarship program, she wouldn’t have been able to pursue her vocation. “I find it 100 per cent more rewarding than my nursing,” she said. “I did really enjoy acute nursing, but I got kind of stuck there and always wanted to go further as midwifery is definitely more my speciality and passion. “It’s not only looking after a woman and baby in labour, it’s looking after them antenatally, postnatally and, if the babies have done well, in the nursery.” “This program has enabled me to stay living rurally in Albany while completing my studies, and being paid.” Students work in their hospital placement three days a week, spend one day on their studies and visit the Perth campus for a week twice a semester for intensive training. Inspired by her cousin, who lost her battle with cancer before completing her midwife course, Ms Morgan was determined to finish her studies. She had done a semester of midwifery on her own before joining the program but found the lack of flexibility and loss of her regular pay too difficult. “With the cost of living rising, I would have had to put my studies on hold again and return to full-time work,” she said. “I probably wouldn’t have finished as I don’t think we would’ve been able to survive on one wage. “I would’ve had to put it on hold again.” Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said the program helps bolster WA’s midwifery workforce. “This program is a fantastic initiative giving registered nurses the opportunity to further their careers without the financial burden of a university degree,” she said. “Midwives are highly trained maternity care providers delivering women-centred care during pregnancy, birth and postnatal period.” Ms Morgan delivered her first baby last Saturday at Albany Health Campus, and will receive her official graduation certificate in October.
