Jake Bruce Tamaroa Tibbits: Bail application adjourned for alleged domestic violence

An Albany man has been remanded in custody for allegedly slamming his partner’s face into a kitchen bench multiple times and throttling her. Jake Bruce Tamaroa Tibbits, 32, appeared in custody in Albany Magistrates Court on Thursday on nine domestic violence charges. Sgt Hartfield said Mr Tibbits allegedly assaulted his partner so badly she was hospitalised. Mr Tibbits allegedly slammed the victim’s head against a bench three to four times on April 8 and held his hand over her nose and mouth for one minute, impeding her breathing. He also allegedly punched her in the face, dragged her by the hair down a hallway and throttled her until she lost consciousness. Represented by Legal Aid defence lawyer Lucy Bourne, Mr Tibbits applied for bail which police prosecutor Sgt Matt Hartfield opposed. He said Mr Tibbits was a high risk to the victim and had a history of self-harm and suicidal ideation, previously asking his partner to help him end his life. He said there was no safe environment Mr Tibbits could be released into. Ms Bourne proposed strict bail conditions for Mr Tibbits, saying he could comply with any conditions, including protective orders, not to communicate with the alleged victim, reporting to police and a surety. Magistrate Erin O’Donnell said she would adjourn to hear the victim’s thoughts on the proposed bail conditions. Mr Tibbits’ bail application was adjourned without being considered and he will next appear in Albany Magistrates Court on May 2.
