Isi makes big waves at Small Fries
Isi Campbell has again mixed it with the best young surfers in WA, reaching the 14-and-under girls’ final at the 15th edition of the Taj’s Small Fries event that wrapped up in Yallingup on Sunday.
Campbell, from Denmark, competed in both the 14-and-under and 16-and-under categories at WA’s biggest surf contest hosted by WA figure Taj Burrow.
In the 14-and-under division, Campbell was an opening-round winner as she scored a combined score of 16.5 before finishing second to Ruby Berry in round two to book a place in the four-person final.
Despite a single wave score of 6.55 during the final, Campbell was unable to jump above her other three rivals as she finished with a combined total of 10.95.
Berry was the 14-and-under champion after scoring 14 to defeat Kaleisha Launders (13.75), Willow Hardy (13.50) and Campbell.
The rising talent produced a terrific weekend in the waves, as she reached the semifinals of the 16-and-under division.
Three strong scores of six or better in round one helped Campbell progress to the next round and she finished with a combined score of 9.3 to grab second spot behind Zali Hewson.
With best scores of 7 and 8.05 in round three, Campbell’s 15.05 was enough to marginally better Lilliana Bowery (15) and finish second to Willow Hardy.
Progressing to one of two semifinals, Campbell faced Hewson for a place in the final but she went down narrowly as a score of 11.35 from two waves was bettered by Hewson (13). Hardy won a high-scoring final to claim her fifth win at the Taj’s Small Fries.
