Host of States best players to tackle sand greens at Riverview Golf Club

Hundreds of players from around the State will converge on the Riverview Golf Club fairways next week for the 2020 Aglime Sand Greens Championship of WA. The event will run from Thursday to Sunday next week, September 10-13, after GolfWA granted Riverview hosting rights in 2018. The championship is hosted by a different golf course that has sand greens each year and attracts close to 200 players for the major sand green competition on the Golf WA men’s calendar. The field is almost full a week out from it starting with players set to compete across three events. A 18-hole super scroungers event run by the Riverview Golf Club and sponsored by Nexus Risk Services will be played on Thursday, featuring a $500 hole-in-one prize on No.13. Players will contest in an 18-hole 4BBB event on Friday before 36 holes of stroke play over Saturday and Sunday. Some of the best golfers around WA will make the trip to the pristine course on the outskirts of Albany, including defending champion Ryan Peake. The long-hitting left-hander took out the event in Narembeen last year and has a powerful drive. Four-time sand green champion Adam Davey is again set to be up the top of the leaderboard and if he is to prevail for a fifth time he would be one victory short of Michael Dennis’ record of six. Former winners Rodney Shemeld, Daniel Negus and two-time former champ Peter Gaby are all set to play. Event manager for Riverview Alan James said this was a wonderful opportunity for the club. “Hosting this event is extremely prestigious and provides a huge financial boost for host clubs but brings with it a lot of work,” he said. “The COVID-19 pandemic came close to scuttling the 2020 event with all golf clubs being closed in March and severe restrictions being placed on the playing of golf across WA.”
