Harness season set for big finale
A successful Albany Harness Racing Club season will end tomorrow night with an eight-race card at Harold Reid Paceway.
Matthew Saw has already clinched the AHRC Trainers’ Premiership for the second straight season but all interest will be in the Drivers’ Premiership standings, with that title still alive going into the final meeting.
Talented driver Madeleine Young leads the premiership with 52 points, ahead of Corey Peterson (41 points), while Trent Wheeler (38) and Shane Butterworth (37) are still in contention.
Young has seven drives in the season-ending meeting so far, while Peterson is not making the trip.
Wheeler has a strong book of seven drives, including Just Barney and Simply Sweet for trainer Jeremy Thornton, while Butterworth also has seven drives on the card.
The $8500 Bakers Junction Pace (2258m) will again attract plenty of interest, with last week’s Denmark Cup winner Athabascan starting from the back row in the race for Saw.
Runner-up in last Friday night’s feature Budd Sidewinder, is well drawn in gate four on the front line in the same race while Saw also has Im Zuleika and Chevrons Champion engaged in the race.
Crimson Floyd and Athabascan are tied as the AHRC leading pacers with 14 points each going into the last meeting with Milliondollahanova, Im Zuleika and Amity Piere all capable of winning the award given they are on 12 points.
The opening event starts at 6.28pm tomorrow.
