Great Southern Football League president Joe Burton says a football season in 2020 could go ahead without all six clubs taking part. All six clubs will present their views on a range of questions, put forward by the league last week, at tomorrow night’s GSFL directors’ meeting, which is likely to decide the fate of any season later this year. Burton said if there was a split decision from clubs on wanting to play this season or not, the GSFL would do its best to accommodate a competition of some sort. “If three clubs come to the meeting and want to play, those clubs will play,” he said. “We can’t force the others to play. “Every club needs to come to the meeting on Wednesday with a plan, and it’s up to the clubs. “If they want to have a season, they can have a season.” Burton said the logistics around a 2020 football season had to be made a lot clearer before any games could be played. “One big unknown is who is going to monitor everything at a game if a season goes ahead,” he said. “Do the police come and control the crowd numbers or the city or is it up to us?” He also said there had been discussions on a colts and 16s competition still being played if the senior competition was scrapped. “Having a junior competition is a must, we would be very supportive of that,” he said. “If they (juniors) are aspiring to go further with their football, we have to give them the opportunity to play. “They can just come along put on a jumper and play, whereas seniors is a lot different.” Burton met with the WA Country Football League and WA Football Commission last night and was still adamant tomorrow night’s GSFL meeting was likely to decide the path ahead for local football this year.
