The Great Southern had strong representation at the recent Netball WA Origin State Cup, with players, coaches and umpires making the trip to Perth for the three-day competition from October 7-9.

Talent was identified at the 2022 Great Southern Regional Championships in Albany in July, with a set of players then invited to join the region’s academy squads.

Squad members attended hub days in Katanning and Albany and were provided with a program of on and off-court sessions including nutrition, strength, conditioning and mental health education.

Final team selections for the State Cup were conducted during the hub days, with the Great Southern sending under-14s, under-16s and under-20s teams.

All teams, coaches and managers stayed together in a camp environment and took part in NWA specialist sessions, recovery sessions, a shopping excursion and a tour of the West Coast Eagles training facilities.

The Great Southern contingent faced teams from Perth, Peel, Wheatbelt-Goldfields, the South West and the Mid West and Gascoyne regions at the Gold Netball Centre in Jolimont.

The under-16 team recorded two wins, one draw and three losses to finish fifth out of seven teams in their pool.

The under-20 squad notched one win and three losses to finish fourth out of five teams in their pool.

Two Great Southern umpires, Chelsea Mulcahy (Narrogin and Districts Netball Association) and Tiahn Mickle (Ongerup Netball Association) were also awarded their National B Badges.
