Great Southern Colts Carnival: Goldfields midfield star wins medal; Great Southern Storm with three in GS 20

Rising Goldfields star Judd Kelman has capped a brilliant Great Southern Colts Carnival with his first Harry Reeves Medal. Kelman was named the best player at the long-running carnival in Lake Grace at the weekend. Goldfields won their first three games of the campaign but fell 26 points short in the grand final against Peel. Railways ball magnet Kelman was outstanding across the four games for his side, leading from the front with lots of possessions and clearances. The 17-year-old said it was disappointing not to finish the carnival with a win in the big game. “Clearly we wanted to end up with the win but it was a good carnival nonetheless,” he said. “It is always an awesome carnival and it just sucks that for three years in a row now we’ve lost the grand final. “We’ve been building for a couple of years and I’m super-proud of the boys for what they’ve done.” Kelman has played five WAFL colts games for Subiaco this year and said he had plans to move to Perth to pursue his footy dream after completing the local season in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. He was one of three Goldfields players named in the Great Southern 20, a team picked by selectors for their performances across the carnival. Kelman, Cuba Garlett and Zachary Hunter earned selection from Goldfields. Carnival champions Peel also had three players selected for the Great Southern 20: Max Foreman, Hugh Menzies and Rhys McDonald. The Great Southern Storm were represented in the team by prime midfielder Kobi Keen, defender Tait Hartfield, and the speedy Jordan Hulm. Ongerup trio Charlie Kelsall, Konnah Holmes and Jackson Callope were named in the team, while Upper Great Southern had Riley Holden, Flynn Spark and Tom Kilpatrick. Umpire of the carnival was awarded to John Terace-Smith.
