A free six-week meditation program will start next month to help people in the Great Southern living with cancer and their families manage their physical and mental wellbeing.

The third term of Cancer Council WA’s Life Now Meditation program will start in Albany next month with in-person and online meditation sessions for people living with cancer, their families and carers.

An experienced counsellor will facilitate the sessions in Albany at the Beryl Grant Centre starting from August 3.

Cancer Council WA Life Now co-ordinator Jessamie Skinner said meditation and exercise could help people manage their wellbeing and reduce anxiety and stress.

“Meditation can help improve quality of life for people with cancer,” she said.

“Research suggests it is useful for treating chronic pain and insomnia and can help in reducing anxiety, stress and blood pressure.

“These courses are offered to people in the Great Southern community who have been diagnosed with cancer or who have experienced a recurrence, secondary or progression, in the last five years. Primary carers are also eligible to register, by themselves, or in support of a cancer patient.”

Life Now Meditation will be held from 9am on Wednesdays from August 3 to September 7 at the Beryl Grant Centre on Townsend Street.

Online sessions will start at 5.30pm on Mondays from August 1 to September 5 at 5.30pm, and 9am on Thursdays from August 11 to September 15.
