Former Lindsay Smith galloper Fangio shows great potential for Rogers

Patience is starting to pay off for exciting galloper Fangio after the former Lindsay Smith-trained horse broke through at Percy Spencer Racecourse on Friday. Fangio had eight trials before going to races, seven of which were for Smith who is now based in Victoria. The four-year-old mare, now in the care of Albany trainer Roy Rogers, ran second on debut in Albany before winning the O’Loughlin Family Racing Maiden (1500m) last week. Fangio travelled wide in running for in-form hoop Kyra Yuill before wearing down stablemate Magnuson Man in the final 200m to win by 1.3 lengths. Rogers said connections had shown plenty of patience in getting Fangio to the races. “She kept going shin sore after every trial and they (Smith stable) had a high opinion of her so they decided to be patient with her,” Rogers said. “She has a lot of upside and it’s good the owners have been patient with her. “She hasn’t been in work that long so her two starts have been pleasing but she is still a bit immature. Her class is getting her through at this stage.” Fangio is capable of rising to metropolitan grade, according to Rogers. “We will step her up into a class two on Friday, which will be a good test then back her off for a bit,” he said. “She might have a short let up then go to Belmont later this season.” Kendel’s Mee Dad made it two wins from two starts since joining Rogers after winning impressively, in what was the second leg of a double. The five-year-old gelding won first-up in Albany before showing a sharp turn of foot on a soft 7 track for apprentice Beaux Banovic-Edwards to win the West Coast Seafoods Handicap (1500m) by 1.8 lengths over leader Family Connection. “He is a good horse, he could have won that race untouched I think,” Rogers said. “He did it pretty easy and he’s going to be a competitive horse where ever he goes.” Consistent sprinter Captivated Point relished a return to Albany and a drop in class, winning the Wallrodt Family Racing Handicap (1100m) for leading trainer-jockey combination Steve Wolfe and Brodie Kirby. The seven-year-old gelding has notched 10 of his 11 victories at Percy Spencer Racecourse and proved far too strong as he crushed his rivals by more than two lengths.
