Pitch for Forked on York marketplace in Albany town centre to stir discussion

The couple behind a bid for a daily marketplace where Albany foodies could dip their toe into York Street trade say it could be a “catalyst for innovative business growth” in the CBD. But one nearby business owner has voiced his concerns about its potential impact on established businesses. Tracey Bridges and Michael Keeler unveiled their proposal for Forked on York last month, which the City of Albany has put out for public comment. They want to use a privately owned carpark between Stirling Terrace and Peels Place as an “all-inclusive community-orientated space” for rotating stalls, mobile food and beverage vans and the occasional musical performance or event. If the proposal is approved by the City of Albany council, food and drink vendors could lease a spot on the 608sqm site. The market could then begin with a six-month trial. The Forked on York project would use the site from 11am-2pm from Monday-Saturday and from 6pm-10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Ms Bridges said it would allow mobile and bricks-and-mortar businesses to operate from York Street on rotation. “We strongly believe Forked on York will increase foot traffic throughout the CBD, particularly during evening and weekend slots, and hopefully will encourage more shops to open at what are now considered unusual or unviable hours,” she said. Mr Keeler said they had already received some expressions of interest from vendors and entertainers. He said the pair had “anticipated some push-back” from parts of the community but planned to be “as considerate to them as possible”. But a few doors up from the proposed site, Artisan Gelato’s John Eichner said he was concerned about the potential impacts on businesses on Albany’s main drag. “I’m not against food trucks, I think food trucks have a place, but I just think that is the wrong place,” he said. “Maybe think a bit broader, build something that is appropriate for York Street. “Why not put something like an old-style pavilion?” Across the road from the proposed site, Majuba Bistro owner Andrea Love said a market would offer more choice. “We need new blood infused through this area, particularly down the bottom end of York Street where we are,” she said. Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry president David Steytler said the chamber supported the plans. “We recommend initiatives to activate our town centre, and the more foot traffic in town, the better it is for our local businesses,” he said. The City of Albany said the proposal would result in an 18-bay car-parking deficiency. It is expected to reach the council in October.
