First event of the Albany and Districts Tennis League attracts 47 players as Truscott wins men’s A-grade comp

The second instalment of the Albany and Districts Tennis League returned to the courts of Lawley Park Tennis Club on Sunday. A total of 47 players took part in doubles and singles matches in windy conditions, but the first event of the league was a success. A total of 11 teams took part in the men’s B-grade competition, six teams faced off in the ladies’ A-grade competition, and four teams participated in the ladies’ B-grade division for the first time, while five players competed in men’s A-grade singles matches. The ladies’ A and B-grade were both doubles competitions, played in a round-robin format, while the men’s A-grade division was a singles competition, also played in round-robin format. The men’s B-grade competition was split into two groups and both groups played round-robin qualification games before playing off in a main draw final and consolation final. Clare King and Ruth Bigwood defeated Jackie Brennan and Kym Bairstow in the ladies’ A-grade doubles. In the B-grade Margot Byrne and Jane Levett prevailed ahead of Lesley Brown and Mandy Bracknell. Ross Truscott walked away victorious in the men’s A-grade singles event ahead of Vincent Brochard. Andrew Sharpe and Marcus McPharlin were crowned champions of the men’s B-grade competition, defeating Trevor Scott and Clayton Thompson 6-2. On Court Tennis’s Brochard runs the league along with the support of Les Bairstow and the Lower Great Southern Tennis Association. The second leg of the series will be on Sunday, December 6.
