Fired up to fight
Kevin Martin has been a volunteer firefighter for more than a decade and knows better than anyone how to run a first response fire team.
Role: I am the fire control officer for the Youngs Brigade, which is what we abbreviate the Youngs Siding fire brigade to.
How long have you been in the role?
It would have to be about 15 years now.
What Do you do in that role?
I manage all the fires in the Youngs Siding area and am in charge of the 25 members in the brigade. We go out and fight any fires, so we look after about 300-odd houses as far as Hay River in Denmark and even up to Redmond.
What do you enjoy the most about the role?
I just enjoy protecting the public and that is why I signed up in the first place. It is nice to look after the district. Not just the close local area, we sometimes go out to Albany.
What is your favourite memory of the role?
That is a hard one but it would have to be the memories from the camaraderie of the group. We take it seriously but we also have fun and have our jokes.
