Great Southern Storm head coach Glynn Verbruggen believes he has a well-balanced team at his disposal for this weekend’s Great Southern Colts Carnival in Kulin. The Storm have made nine of the past 10 grand finals at the long-running carnival and will be aiming to go one better after losing by just one point in the 2019 decider to Lower South West. However Verbruggen is excited about the prospect of his key position players who have bolstered the Storm squad for their 2021 campaign, which will be used as a lead-up to next month’s Nutrien Ag Country Football Championships in Perth. Young key forward Coen Jackman will be a key focal point in the front half, while fellow talls Tristan Ballard, Jarrod Brack and Xavier Brenton-Reed will also be vital to the Storm’s chances. Verbruggen is confident in the squad he had assembled, especially the abundance of key position players. “I think we have a very even side with guys that can win one-on-one matches all over the ground,” he said. “Our strength is definitely our spine, we have strong key position players that are capable of playing all over the ground. “It’s a really even team and we are looking forward to the challenges ahead.” Strong players Lachy Hansen, Aden Castlehow, Flynn Breuker and Harry Hordacre are all unavailable, while Carson Flower will miss through injury. Assisting Verbruggen with coaching duties at the carnival will be Kurt McKain, Joel Want and Craig Frost. “At carnival footy it’s all about getting a fast start, so we want to hit the ground running,” Verbruggen said. “We have real quality forward of the ball, so we will look to move the ball quick and give them the chance to put a winning score on the board.” Storm will face Eastern Districts, Esperance, Goldfields, Ongerup, Peel and Upper Great Southern as they look to take out the carnival. The team at the top of the standings after the two days will be crowned champions.
