Excitement builds for Perth Schorchers cricket week across Great Southern Region
Cricket is back and keen young cricketers are being encouraged to sign up for the season ahead when the Perth Scorchers bus drives into the region next week.
The Perth Scorchers bus will travel around the region next week for events at schools as well as community Come and Play events in Albany, Mt Barker and Boxwood Hill as part of the Great Southern Play Cricket Week campaign.
Albany’s big Come and Play Carnival will be held on Tuesday from 4-5pm at the North Road cricket grounds and is expected to drum up participation levels this season.
Edmunds said the Junior Blasters program was focused on fun, making new friends and learning the skills for boys and girls aged five to seven, while Master Blasters was short and fast-paced modified games of cricket for children aged 7 to 10.
He said the Albany and Districts Cricket Association also ran an integrated blast program for children of all abilities catering for participants with a disability aged 5 to 10.
“Cricket really is a sport for all and registrations so far are a great indication of that,” he said.
“Its not just boys’ cricket that is growing. Girls playing cricket is growing across the country and State, and in the Great Southern 25 per cent of our cricket blast registrations last season were young girls who want to play with their friends.”
Part of the PlayCricket Week in the Great Southern next week will include a junior girls forum at Sounness Park in Mt Barker on Wednesday from 6.30-8.30pm.
Edmunds said a major focus this season would be establishing a junior girls’ competition in the region. He said there were growing levels of interest.
