Albany’s Joel Evans has captured his first WA two-gun title after edging out close rival Steve Hurley at the 2019 Lever Action Rifle Championships.

Evans finished third to Hurley in the two-gun title last year but was able to turn the tables on his fellow club member after winning the open division on the second day of competition.

Hurley won the classic calibre event on the opening day but was unable to hold off Evans’ charge on the final day as he finished second in the two-gun aggregate.

Albany’s Sue Knapp continued her strong record at the championships by claiming the ladies title.

The WA titles were held on June 1 and 2 at the Wanneroo Shooting Complex.

Meanwhile back in May, Hurley tasted success after winning the NSW two-gun title at the NSW Lever Action Rifle Championships held in Mudgee.

The multiple State and national champion was the only WA competitor to make the trip and finished second in the classic calibre before bouncing back to win the open event on his way to more two-gun glory.

Local shooters will now sharpen their skills ahead of the national championships that will be held in Tasmania in October.

A strong Albany contingent of almost 10 shooters, including Evans and Hurley, are expected to make the trip.
