Cranbrook police on Albany Highway allegedly clock disqualified driver at 160km/h in unregistered car

Cranbrook police have caught a disqualified driver who was allegedly speeding at 160km/h in an unregistered vehicle on Albany Highway on Sunday night. A 26-year-old Perth man will face court in August on driving charges relating to the hoon incident. Police say the man was travelling home to Perth after leaving Albany in a borrowed and unlicensed car when he passed by patrolling police at the end of their shift in the 110km/h zone on Albany Highway. He was caught near the cross-section of Yonka Road and was the only person in the car before police soon discovered that the man was on a three-month disqualification and had only ever previously held a learner’s permit. The vehicle had not been registered since March 28. The man has been charged with one count of reckless driving and one count of no authority to drive. First Class Constable Cat McFadyean said it was “pretty lucky” they stopped him at the beginning of his trip to Perth. “It can be a dangerous road for someone with a lack of experience on the roads,” she said. “And at such high speeds with its soft shoulders, no streetlights and wildlife, it was very lucky we stopped him.” The vehicle was impounded and with assistance from Cranbrook police the man was returned to Albany. “Luckily, he got to meet us before he caused injury to himself or others,” Great Southern police said on Facebook. “Thank you to our colleagues in Katanning and Albany for your assistance.” The man is due to appear in Albany Magistrates Court on August 1.
