Disabled Surfers Association Great Southern gears up for its first 2026 session, calling for more volunteers

The Disabled Surfers Association Great Southern is calling for more volunteers to help provide surf lessons to people with disabilities.
Volunteers are needed across four sessions on January 10, February 14, March 28 and April 18.
DSAGS president Kerry Oakley said the event has been running for the past eight years and is always looking for fresh faces to help out.
“We are looking for volunteers to help out on the 10th of January for our first event of 2026, so we can provide a safe surfing experience for all surfers,” she said.

“The more volunteers we have, the more surfers we can have and the more experience in the water.”
Ms Oakley said whether it’s setting up, packing up, being out on the water, playing beach cricket or cooking the barbecue, every volunteer can play a vital role.
She said the sessions aim to create an inclusive environment that brings different members of the community together.
“We cater for all people with any disability no matter how challenging,” she said.
“We call it putting smiles on dials.”

Set-up in front of the Albany Surf Lifesaving Club at Middleton Beach starts from 7.30am, with surfers taking to the water at 9.30am before a free barbecue lunch at 12pm.
Wetsuits and coloured shirts are provided to all volunteers for the day. To find out more information about how to volunteer visit the Disabled Surfers Association Great Southern Facebook page.
