DFES investigation into bushfire at Sea View in Bayonet Head deems cause of blaze deliberate

A fire in Bayonet Head bushland in the early hours of Friday morning has been flagged as suspicious with Department of Fire and Emergency Services handing their investigation to police. Emergency services were called to the area of public bush near Sea View at 12.38am on Friday to put out an 80m by 25m bushfire. Two Albany volunteer firefighting crews and one DFES crew arrived at the scene and extinguished the blaze by 4am. The affected area consists of dense bush, with residential properties on one side and a thin stretch of beach at Oyster Harbour on the other. DFES fire and investigation officers attended the site on Friday morning and determined the cause of the fire was deliberate, passing the matter on to police. Friday’s incident is the latest in a string of suspicious blazes under investigation in the Great Southern. In January, a fire in the City of Albany razed more than 30ha of the Vancouver Peninsula near Camp Quaranup. More recently, an enormous blaze with seven ignition points cleared 13,700ha of land across the Walpole Wilderness Area. Both were deemed suspicious by DFES investigators and are under investigation by police.
