Albany detectives have arrested and charged a man who allegedly committed a robbery while armed with an axe in Mt Barker last month.

The incident is alleged to have occurred about 10.45pm on January 19 on Deane Street.

Police will allege the victim, a man in his 20s, pulled up in his car outside a house, where a man opened his car door, produced a small axe and told him to get out of the vehicle.

The victim got out of the vehicle, took the keys with him and ran to a nearby house. After taking a backpack and phone from the car, the perpetrator walked south on Deane Street.

According to police, the victim then shouted at the perpetrator, who dropped the property and walked off.

Police said a 40-year-old Mt Barker man presented himself at Albany Police Station last week, leading to his arrest in relation to the incident.

He was charged with armed robbery and is due to appear at Albany Magistrate’s Court on February 27.
