Denmark surfing sensation Isi Campbell crowned WA under-18 girls champion after top weekend in the surf

Young WA surfing sensation Isi Campbell has added the under-18 girls’ crown to her growing list of accolades after an impressive performance in the State Junior Surfing Titles at the weekend. Campbell was among nearly 100 competitors who took part in the third and final round of the WA titles in Geraldton, culminating in clean and contestable waves at Back Beach for the finals on Sunday. Fresh from her silver medal win with Australia at the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships in El Salvador, Campbell produced a terrific performance across the weekend to reach finals in the under-18 junior girls’ and under-16 cadet girls’ competitions. The talented teenager was one of the stand-out surfers at the event, backing up her win in the under-18 division in Margaret River back in March as she swept her way to the State crown. With a great mix of power and style, Campbell dropped a combined two-wave total of 10.83 from a possible 20 to defeat Margaret River’s Zali Hewson, Augusta’s Ruby Berry and Margaret River’s Mia Scott. Campbell scored a heat-high seven from a possible 10 on her way to final glory, with her combined score bettering Hewson’s 10.23, while Berry (8.87) and Scott (7.13) filled third and fourth. “It’s been two days of really contrasting conditions,” Campbell said after her State triumph. “But today reminds me a lot of the waves back at home and I couldn’t be happier to be back here in WA competing with my friends.” Campbell also reached the final of the under-16 division, finishing runner-up to eventual State champion Berry. Berry scored 12.5 to edge out Campbell (10.83), while Mandurah’s Mia Jacobs (7.07) and Cowaramup’s Grace Cook (4.1) rounded out the top four. Campbell has now booked her place on the WA team for the 2022 Australian Junior Surfing Titles to be held on North Stradbroke Island in Queensland later this year.
