Denmark Surf Life Saving Club’s Anthony McEwan bags gold at the 2024 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships

Age is just a number for Anthony McEwan who waved the flag for WA and the Denmark Surf Life Saving Club clinching gold at the Aussie Surf Life Saving Competition in Queensland last month. The 2024 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships was held on the Sunshine Coast on April 13-21, attracting more than 6000 competitors from across the nation for a host of water and beach-based events. The 55-year-old was the quickest across the soft sand of the Sunshine Coast bagging a gold medal in the masters 2km dash. Reflecting on his achievement, an elated McEwan said the triumph was rewarding for himself and the club he cherished. “I love competing for and representing the club and I think I was the only one over there from the Great Southern region so it’s nice to be able to represent our area well,” he said. “It’s awesome to be able to go across to Queensland with my son and compete alongside him.” McEwan opted to test his ability against the nation’s best after securing gold at the 2024 SunSmart WA Surf Life Saving Championships in Sorrento back in March and hoped his victory would encourage youngsters to try their hand at the sport. ”After I won gold down here I thought I would give the nationals a crack,” he said. “I’ve been honing in on this for a while and it’s nice to get the reward. “One of the main reasons I did it is to inspire youth in the community to have a go at surf live saving. “Just getting out and competing and having a go. I love the Denmark club and it’s great fun.”
