Denmark students enjoyed a special visit from acclaimed children’s author Cristy Burne during Book Week celebrations.

Denmark Public Library hosted the annual Children’s Book Week event on September 8, which was attended by students from Denmark Primary School and Kwoorabup Nature School. Burne’s work has been published internationally and is inspired by science, technology and creativity.

More than 100 students had the chance to meet the Perth-based author who aims to encourage the next generation of “science-savvy citizens”.

Her books include Aussie STEM Stars: Fiona Wood Inventor of Spray on Skin; Beneath the Trees; and To The Lighthouse.

Library officer Nicola Shaw said Burne was an inspirational speaker who kept the students entertained and engaged.

“All of the students who participated in the presentations were wowed by her energy, ideas and science experiments,” she said.

“Cristy has a real skill of bringing to life story structure and narrative techniques using practical demonstrations and sharing her stories and experiences.

“It was a real treat to be able to host her in Denmark.”

Burne has been visiting schools across the region this month, speaking to primary school students in towns including Pingrup, Tambellup, Broomehill, Cranbrook, Kendenup and Mt Barker.
