Denmark Senior High School won the final regional qualifying event of the SunSmart School Surfing Titles hosted by Surfing WA at Nanarup Beach last Friday. Grommets representing six schools from Albany, Denmark and Esperance took part in the Statewide event in sunny conditions carving up the waves on surfboards and bodyboards. Four events were held for surfing and bodyboarding and were split up into senior and junior girls’ and boys’ categories. Across the eight divisions Denmark Senior High School walked away winners in four of the events to claim the overall title from Albany Senior High School, who won three events, while the other category was won by North Albany Senior High School. DSHS won the junior boys’ and girls’ surfing along with the senior boys’ surfing and junior boys’ bodyboarding. ASHS won the senior girls’ surfing competition along with junior and senior girls’ bodyboarding and were runners-up in the junior girls’ surf event. NASHS won the senior boys’ bodyboarding event and finished fifth overall. Esperance Senior High School, who were third overall, finished runner-up in junior boys’ surfing, junior girls’ bodyboarding and senior boys’ bodyboarding. Esperance Anglican Community School finished fourth overall after making the final in the senior girls’ surfing and bodyboarding competitions. St Joseph’s College were the other Great Southern school to compete in the event. The winner of each category is eligible for the State schools final at Trigg Beach on August 28.
