Denmark residents encouraged to get ‘bushfire ready’ at family friendly information day

The Shire of Denmark will host a community information day to encourage residents to get “bushfire ready” ahead of summer. The family-friendly community information day will start at 10.30am on November 26 at the Denmark Civic Centre. Residents will have a chance to watch a short documentary about the devastating February bushfire that burnt more than 2150ha and destroyed four homes. More than 50 homes were saved as the fire put Denmark on high alert for three days from February 4. There will also be a presentation on bushfire preparedness and a chance to meet Denmark’s bushfire brigade captains. Bushfire Ready Denmark lead facilitator Murray Brooker said residents should use the last weekend in November as a bushfire preparedness weekend. “The goal is to get everyone in our community in the habit of making that last weekend before summer a bushfire preparedness weekend,” he said. “For this community information day, we’ve pulled together a program which we hope will be interesting and informative for our community members who are keen to find out more about what they can do to be prepared. “It’ll be an informal morning with friendly volunteers on hand to help and we hope to see plenty of people pop in to find out more about how to be bushfire ready.” The free event will run from 10.30am to noon, with the documentary screening at 11am.
