Denmark Festival of Voice: Folk trio The Jig is Up ready to take the stage this weekend for their band’s debut

Best friends and folk trio The Jig Is Up, consisting of teenagers Poppyanna Fisken, Evie Francis and Sienna Collyer, are no strangers to the stage, having performed in Festival of Voice before as students, though this year marks their debut in this format. Poppyanna, 15, Evie, 15, and Sienna, 16, first met as students at Golden Hill Steiner School before continuing on to do certificates of music at TAFE, learning their instruments — violin for Poppyanna and Evie and guitar for Sienna — and “bush dance” flair from their teachers. First performing as The Jig Is Up as buskers around the Denmark township, the girls are excited to bring their show, which they each describe as “traditional Celtic”, “folk-fiddly” and “gypsy”, to the Festival of Voice stage. “We have been playing music together for most of our lives,” Evie said. “It will be nice to do this as a band because even though we’ve done the festival in other ensembles before, in (The Jig Is Up) we can really vibe off each other.” Decked out in their flowy dresses and waistcoats, and playing sans shoes, The Jig Is Up are folk incarnate, aiming to bring an upbeat, toe-tapping energy to their performance and hoping their success will secure them future gigs as a trio. The Jig Is Up will perform at 3.30pm, on June 1, at the Denmark Artshouse. The Denmark Festival of Voice showcases the different ways a voice can be used with more than 380 artists performing in 56 acts over the three-day festival.
