Denmark Boating and Angling Club will run the Rainbow Coast fishing competition again this year

Great Southern anglers will go head-to-head this weekend in the Rainbow Coast Fishing Competition held by Denmark Boating and Angling club. The event supported by Recfish West will start on Saturday with a briefing at the Ocean View Function Centre at 1 pm before competitors head out to their favourite spots along the south coast. Weigh-in for the fish caught will be at midday on Sunday with $3500 worth of prizes to hand out to winners in each category. The Angling club is expecting more than 80 competitors across all divisions, mini juniors, juniors, ladies and men with prizes for heaviest skin ($200) and scale fish ($300) as well as King George whiting, skippy flathead and Taylor ($100). Denmark Boating ad Angling Club president Andrew Ellis said the competition had been running for nearly 25 years. “As far as we know we are the biggest shore-based fishing competition independently run in WA,” he said. “We normally get a few Taylor caught, and a few herring, it’s a bit early for salmon but we do normally get one or two weighed. “A few people go out there and try and catch the grouper, we also get those trying to catch the sharks so we normally end up with two or three six-foot sharks weighed in. “The year before last we had a 30kg grouper weighed in which won the $300 prize.” With the 100th anniversary of the angling club just around the corner, Mr Ellis said they hoped to make the competition bigger and better next year “We are hoping to crack 100 people for the 100 years next year,” he said. “We are looking into a bit of funding and some grants to put together a bigger prize pool and make that happen.”
