Country-raised footballers Tom baldwin and Anthony Davis debut in Claremont’s memorable round one upset win over Subiaco

Jerramungup’s Tom Baldwin and Borden’s Anthony Davis have shared a special moment together, the two country-raised footballers making a memorable league debut for Claremont in round one of the WAFL on Saturday, as they upset the reigning premiers Subiaco. The pair played in the Ongerup Football Association for their respective towns before joining Claremont in the WAFL. Baldwin has played colts and reserves for the past three seasons for the Tigers while Davis was a part of the Tigers colts premiership last year, where he kicked the winning goal, and has now stepped up to seniors. Baldwin collected nine possessions and two marks in a lively display against the Lions. Davis battled hard in defence to finish with seven possessions, three marks and three tackles. The Tigers handed the Lions just their second loss since the 2017 grand final after prevailing by 20 points at Leederville Oval. Davis said he had always aspired to play league football. “Coming through all the development sides I really looked up to the league team and watched them closely so it was special to be a part of their side,” the 19-year-old said. “I don’t think there’s a much better way to start my WAFL journey than to knock off the powerhouse side of the comp and the emotions shown by the senior players really emphasised the significance of the win. “For Mum and Dad to be there to present my jumper was special and gave me a sense of pride that I was representing them and Borden, which unfortunately folded a few years ago. “To debut with Tom was special as we both came from small areas down south in the OFA and had similar football journeys. “You’ve got to be switched on 100 per cent of the time in league as lapses can cost you goals in defence.” Baldwin said his life revolved around sport in Jerramungup. “I think as a kid it (league) is always a level that you believe you can get to,” the 19-year-old said. “But as you make steps towards that grade of football you begin to unveil the real amount of mental and physical application that’s required in footy and life. “It was definitely an intense game to play in. “I think it is important at these times to reflect and appreciate where you are and where you’ve come from. “My family is the reason for both of those things so it was particularly special to have them involved.” Baldwin said after playing against Davis as a kid, it was nice to share their first league game together. “It’s awesome to reflect on how you competed against them for your whole childhood,” he said. “And now you walk out beside them knowing that they’re there protecting you and having your back.”
