Rovers cemented top spot on the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s division one ladder after brilliant two-goal efforts from Justin Bielecki and Michael Draper helped their side defeat Royals on Saturday night. The round five match was played in icy conditions and an early strike from Draper set the tone as Rovers went 1-0 up in the opening stages of the game. Rovers were in no mood to sit back and rest on their laurels as they mounted pressure on Royals, suffocating their opposition and preventing them from stringing together clean passes in the midfield. Rovers players were bemused by a number of close offside calls towards the end the first half as several potential chances went begging. However Rovers added to their tally soon after with Justin Bielecki breaking clear down the left wing and cutting back a pin-point low cross into Draper’s path. Draper capitalised on the opportunity, firing home a left foot strike past the despairing dive of Royals’ goalkeeper to put his side 2-0 up at the break. Royals players started positively in the second half but an impressive strike from Justin Bielecki gave Rovers a commanding three-goal lead. Royals hit back shortly after as a Jean-Pierre Folco Telpus finish gave his side hope of staging an unlikely comeback. But the ever-dangerous Justin Bielecki bobbed up once again, curling in a classy second goal to widen the gap even further. Royals were given one last opportunity to claw their way back into the contest as Rovers goalkeeper Will Elms fluffed his lines, miskicking a back pass resulting in an own goal but the Royals were left to lament a lacklustre first half as they went down 4-2. Meanwhile Polonia thumped Caledonians after a stunning six-goal second half helped them remain second place on the men’s division one ladder. Caledonians trailed 2-1 going into half-time but a hat-trick from Jason Wilson and goals to James Naylor, Liam Murdock, Alex Meston and Luca Trichilo sealed the 8-2 win. In the other league fixture, Denmark’s Liam Rubie-Mazzali and Andy Powys helped their side record a 2-1 win over Bayswater despite Bayswater’s Dylan Cook hitting the scoresheet. In the women’s division one competition, Denmark A moved to top spot on the GSSA ladder following their 8-0 thrashing of Phoenix on Friday night. Alyssa Chromow was superb, netting three goals, while Olivia McEwan also hit two of her own. Rovers thumped Sonics 6-0, Bayswater won a tight contest over Polonia B 2-0, Mt Barker downed Polonia 1-0 and Caledonians got on top over Denmark B 7-2 in the other games. In men’s division two, Bayswater drew 1-1 with Caledonians while Rovers and Royals ended in a 3-all draw. Polonia were big winners in the women’s division two competition, downing Denmark D 5-1 while Royals thumped Denmark C 6-1 and Mt Barker and Rovers played out a 0-0 draw. In the men’s social division played last Tuesday, Old Boys won a tight 1-0 contest against Phoenix Social, Rovers Social went down 6-0 to Baysie Masters, ACC cruised to a comfortable 4-1 victory, Bayswater Social won 1-0 and Denmark Social brushed aside Polonia Social in a comfortable win.
