Claremont remain winless in 2024, Jacob Blight shines in Peel Thunder loss, Edwards forgets kicking boots

Claremont, who feature talented Great Southern pair, Anthony Davis and Declan Mountford, remain winless after two rounds after a big loss to the reigning premiers at the weekend. Hailing from Borden, Davis was named in the Tigers’ best with 21 disposals and four tackles in a tough encounter, while Mountford toiled for 11 possessions in their 21.9 (135) to 6.9 (45) defeat. Talon Delacey firmed his claim for a league recall after gathering 17 disposals and booting a goal for the Tigers reserves earlier in the afternoon alongside Railways Coen Jackman who battled in and under the packs for seven disposals and 10 tackles. Two rising Great Southern stars played a key hand in the Tigers colts 10-point round two victory over the Sharks. Rory Luscombe (two goals) and Lucas Ravenhill (one) combined for three goals in their side’s 13.8 (86) to 11.10 (76) triumph. Luscombe accumulated 14 disposals, four marks and two tackles while Ravenhill finished with eight touches and six hit-outs. Former Railways player Jacob Blight was impressive in Peel Thunder’s first loss of the season after they were downed by Subiaco by 26 points at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Sunday. The 2023 WAFL team of the year representative was busy all day gathering 20 disposals and seven marks and was named in Thunder’s best. After defeating reigning premiers East Fremantle in round one, Thunder were made to pay for missed opportunities and poor skill execution in their 14.8 (92) to 9.12 (66) round two loss. It was a weekend to forget for former Royals and current Swan Districts key forward Tom Edwards who struggled in front of goal as his side were handed their first loss of the WAFL season. Edwards seemingly left his kicking boots at home finishing with two goals from six attempts as his side were defeated by East Perth 18.11 (119) to 11.16 (82) at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Saturday. The Lions’ product was left to rue missed shots in front of the big sticks at crucial times before a punishing East Perth put away the Swans by 27 points. Edwards had two opportunities to cut the Swans’ deficit to single digits on the stroke of quarter time but missed them both before converting his first goal of the afternoon midway through the second to extend his side’s lead. After adding his second major in the opening minute of the first last quarter, reducing the margin to just five points, East Perth piled on six goals to one to close out the game. In the reserves competition, North Albany ball magnet Alex Pearce continued his hot run of form for East Perth making a case for a league call-up after gathering 29 disposals and laying five tackles, following on from last weekend’s superb effort (31 and nine).
