City of Albany CEO Andrew Sharpe hoping for reflection and a united future in Reconciliation Week

Albany will commemorate Reconciliation Week with three events exploring this year’s theme of Now More Than Ever, a statement on last year’s failed Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum. The initiatives, held in partnership with Reconciliation WA, aim to foster understanding and respect within the city said chief executive Andrew Sharpe. “Reconciliation Week is a crucial time for our community to come together, reflect on our shared history, and commit to building a united future,” he said. “These events offer valuable opportunities for everyone in our community to engage with Noongar culture, learn from elders, and contribute to the reconciliation process. “We are honoured to support and celebrate Reconciliation Week with such a diverse and enriching program.” On Monday, city staff, Indigenous elders and community members enjoyed a buffet-style breakfast before tuning into the live stream of the Reconciliation WA event in Boorloo-Perth. On Wednesday, a local Menang First Nations artist and University of Western Australia research associate Shandell Cummings will host a talk to share her experiences as an Indigenous artist and delve into the importance of knowledge sharing between different cultures. At 1.30pm on Thursday, Albany Public Library will screen the Sweet Country for free. The 2017 film, set in 1929 in Central Australia follows middle-aged Indigenous farmer Sam Kelly who finds himself on the run with his wife after a violent confrontation.
