Thousands lined York Street to watch the floats parade up and down as part of Albany’s annual Christmas Pageant on Saturday. The brisk December weather did little to dampen the spirits of the crowds who had gathered for the pageant as well as the Christmas Festival. Judges awarded the best vehicle float prize to Albany Community Care, while Southern Edge Arts was named the best walking group in the pageant. The people’s choice award was claimed by Australian Christian College. Crowds grew steadily over the course of the afternoon in readiness for the pageant with police leading the floats up the street from 6pm. Snow was blasted from the library balcony, live music took centre stage in the town square, and there were markets aplenty to wander through in Alison Hartman Gardens as well as fun and games for the children. Santa Claus made himself available for photo opportunities with children throughout the afternoon before making a guest appearance in his sleigh at the rear of the pageant.
