Carnival showcases region’s young talent
Hundreds of young players have hit the court for the highly successful Great Southern junior netball carnival held at Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre last Sunday.
It was the first time Albany Netball Association had hosted the event, run by Denmark Netball Club, which attracted 36 teams from seven different associations.
Albany, Narrogin, Ongerup, Denmark, Katanning, Esperance, Ravensthorpe and Kojonup were all represented, with teams preparing for the upcoming Members Championships in Perth over the June long weekend.
Albany won four of the divisions while Narrogin and Katanning also tasted success in a number of high-quality finals.
In the under-17s, Albany 1 were comfortable winners over Albany 2, 32-11, with Albany 5 successful over Albany 4 in the under-15 decider 35-20.
Albany 6 won the under-14 title after beating Albany 7, 23-16, and Narrogin 3 prevailed in a thriller, 19-18, over Albany 8 in the under-13s.
Katanning 3 edged out Albany 10 in the under-12 final, 17-14, and the other victory went to Albany Green after their 16-12 result over Albany Gold.
The Great Southern Netball Region also presented its volunteer of the year award, with Kelly Shroeter, from DNC, the recipient of the award this season.
