Caledonians end luckless run with defeat of title fancies
Reigning league champions Caledonians came from two goals down to pinch a memorable win over Polonia in round 11 of the men’s premier league on Saturday night.
Polonia, the favourites to win this year’s league title, were on top early after two brilliant pieces of play both led to goals.
Star Jared Wiegele produced a terrific finish and Nathan Griffiths also found the back of the net in the first 25 minutes as Polonia raced 2-0 up over their rivals.
Caledonians were able to hit back, however, as they began to hold onto possession and a resulting free kick was expertly taken by defender Nathan Kay to pinch one back.
A clever through ball presented Nicholas Fox with a perfect opportunity to level scores nearing half-time and he delivered as Caledonians went into the break with some momentum.
With their young brigade winning plenty of ball in midfield, Polonia continued to create chances in the second half but with about 20 minutes to play, Ethan Watson scored the winner for Caledonians.
The defending champions would hold on 3-2 to get a breakthrough result after drawing their past three league matches.
League leaders Albany-Bays-water were far too strong for Albany Rovers in their men’s reserves clash last Saturday.
Fletcher Warren finished with a hat-trick as Albany-Bayswater extended their 5-1 advantage with six more goals in the second half .
Phoenix moved to 17 points after prevailing in a tight tussle with Albany Royals, 4-2. It was locked up at 2-2 heading into the second half but a hat-trick from Chad Myors was the difference in the end.
Polonia remain within two points of the league leaders after they produced a 5-0 win over Caledonians. In the men’s social/vets league action played on July 23, The Vets were able to edge out Mt Barker to remain in second spot.
Cross Keys United lifted themselves off the foot of the table with a 7-1 win over Albany-Bayswater while Old Boys thumped Polonia Eagles 7-1 and Rovers Social did enough to beat Denmark.
Meanwhile in the women’s premier league, Port Albany were big winners last Friday over Royals, netting five goals in each half.
Polonia beat Caledonians on forfeit and Denmark’s winning streak continued after a sole goal from Ebony Thompson was enough to hold out Phoenix.
