GSSA 2023: Caledonians advance to next round of men’s division two cup, Denmark women win on penalties

Braces to Riley Marsh and Sam Jefferey helped Caledonians advance to the next round of the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s division two cup competition after their comfortable 6-2 win against Bayswater on Saturday. Bayswaters’ Matthew Hodak and Archie Simmonds’ two goals weren’t enough as they bundled out of the knockout tournament with a first-round exit. In the men’s division one cup competition on Saturday, Rovers outlasted Phoenix to claim a 3-1 win in extra time. Neither side could be separated at the end of 90 minutes with last year’s cup champions skipping clear late. Justin Bielecki, Brad Chapman and Jonathan Masing all found the back of the net in the triumph while Beau Timmer scored a consolation for Phoenix. Caledonians made light work of Polonia in the other division one match, Joseph Love firing in a hat-trick in the 8-2 thumping. Nathan Kay (two goals), Oliver Trichilo, Ben Harris and Kai Thrupp-Probst also chipped in while Ross Savage and James Naylor got two back for Polonia. Denmark won a thrilling penalty shootout against Mt Barker in the women’s division one cup clash on Friday after a 0-0 finish at the end of regular and extra time. Converted penalties to Tayah Mastalerz, Eloise Garland, Imogen Lacy and Leah Field were enough to see last season’s cup champions defeat their rivals in the competition for the second straight year. Meanwhile, Phoenix were 3-2 winners against Rovers as Liz Bosch, Em Van Den Dool and Shari Kroeze all hit the scoresheet in women’s division one. Megan Orr and Naomi Butler scored in Caledonians 2-0 win against Polonia while Sharks defeated Sonics 2-1 in the other division one match. In women’s division two, Denmark Rezzies advanced after recording a 3-1 win against Caledonians and Phoenix thumped Denmark Carnaby’s 8-1. In men’s division three, Phoenix claimed an 8-1 win against Denmark, Polonia crushed Rovers 8-0, Bayswater defeated Rovers Vets 4-2 and Old Boys defeated ACC 3-1.
