Burke’s big day on the red dirt as Scenic Lord claims Roebourne Cup in remarkable comeback from injury
Albany trainer Natalie Burke had a day to remember when she claimed both feature races at Roebourne on Saturday.
Burke teamed up with jockey Kate Southam to take out the $50,000 TABtouch Roebourne Cup (2200m) and $30,000 Thrifty Karratha Sprint (1200m) in a wonderful training performance.
Veteran galloper Scenic Lord scored an upset in the Roebourne Cup after overcoming a career-threatening injury to salute at odds of $24 in his fourth run back.
The 10-year-old ran second in the 2019 Kununurra Cup but was then sideline for 21 months with injury.
Southam had Scenic Lord in front as they straightened for home and they held off a strong challenge from Macavity to win by one length.
Burke and Southam teamed up with $2.80 favourite Counter Drive earlier in the Karratha Sprint, winning by a head in a close finish.
Albany jockey Natasha Faithfull notched a winning double at the dirt meeting, scoring with Chengdu from the Albany stable of Gerry Hughes and then Enterprise.
