Brooke Fiore: distracted and 49km/h over the speed limit earns $1200 fine and licence disqualification

An Albany woman has been fined $1200 after she was captured travelling 49km/h over the speed limit on Albany Highway in October. Brooke Fiore, 31, faced Albany Magistrates Court on Tuesday on one charge of reckless driving at a speed of 155km/h or more. Police prosecutor Sgt Matt Hartfield told the court in the early hours of October 4, Fiore was travelling south on Albany Highway in Green Valley. Fiore was captured by a speed camera travelling in a Kia Cerato sedan at 159km/h. The section of road is a 110km/h zone and Fiore was 49km/h above that limit. A vehicle surrender notice was issued to Fiore by police. Fiore was self-represented and said she was incredibly remorseful for the speed. She said did not realise what her speed was and she was driving back from her grandmother’s funeral. “I can’t take it back, I can’t change it, I can only say that I’m sorry,” she said. Magistrate Dianne Scaddan said that if Fiore continued to travel at such high speeds her family “will have something else to contend with” aside from her grandmother’s funeral. “If a kangaroo or something jumped out in front of you, your ability to take evasive action is limited,” Ms Scaddan said. “You’re lucky someone else wasn’t hurt.” Fiore was given a six-month licence disqualification and fined $1200.
