Bottom teams draw as Caledonians stay on top

The bottom-of-the-table clash between Royals and Albany-Bayswater ended in an entertaining 4-4 draw in the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s open competition at the North Road soccer grounds last Sunday.

The sides were deadlocked 1-1 at half-time before three goals each in the second half ensured they would share the points.

Albany-Bayswater captain Cain Pietropaolo and Jordan Thomas knocked in two goals each.

Royals’ Matias Alonso scored twice, while Nathan Griffiths and Roger Mejia Paez also found the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Caledonians maintained their buffer at the top of the standings with a 2-1 win over Rovers.

Kieran Loveridge and Brennan Childs scored for Caledonians, while Bradley Chapman was Rovers’ lone goal scorer.

Phoenix won by forfeit against Polonia.

In the women’s open competition, Denmark notched a comprehensive 7-0 victory against Grammar Blue last Friday night courtesy of a Gabrielle White hat-trick.

Josie Cloud scored twice for Denmark, along with Branwen Morgan and Ebony Thompson.

Phoenix managed to move into second position in the standings with a 4-0 win over Caledonians.

Tianna Korthuis knocked in a hat-trick, while Monique Eikelboom also scored for Phoenix.

Cross Keys United claimed an important 1-0 result over Denmark in the men’s masters competition last Tuesday.

In the other fixtures, The Vets went down 2-3 to Albany-Bayswater, Old Boys disposed of Rovers Black 12-1 and Caledonians beat Polonia 4-2.

In the women’s league B, Mt Barker United remain undefeated after accounting for Port Albany 3-1 last Friday.

With the scores locked 1-1 at halftime Mt Barker broke away in the second half to claim the win.

In other results, Denmark White and Polonia White fought out a tough 1-1 draw, Denmark Black beat Grammar White 5-1, Royals defeated Polonia Red 3-0 and Rovers thumped Albany-Bayswater 10-0.
