Best sharpshooters from across the State pull the trigger at Albany Clay Target Club’s January Trap Carnival

Shooters from across the State took part in Albany Clay Target Club’s January Trap Carnival at the weekend, cracking more than 20,000 clay targets throughout the three-day competition which started on Friday. Each competitor took part in seven events before their aggregate score was calculated to determine the winner of each of the four grades. Wagin dead-eye Cameron Browne was the sharpest of all 60 shooters after scoring an impressive 372 out of 385 to win the open. Peel’s Tony Burnard (376) and Gary Scott (370) secured the AA and A classes respectively while Leanne Knight from WA Gun Club claimed the B-division with 359. Father and son duo Leon and Ben Whittle shared a special moment going head-to-head in an A-grade shoot-off with Leon Whittle having the last laugh, shooting 33/34 to pip his son by just one shot. Dean Marrows was Albany’s only triumph after his 336 was the best in the C-class. Wagin 15-year-old Jax Moffatt showed he is one for the future after achieving the top score of 362 among the junior participants. Tegan Stanley (342) from Collie and Mike Voke (366) of WA Gun Club won the ladies and veterans classes respectively. Albany Clay Target Club’s Brad Williamson said the conditions were superb across the weekend making for a high standard of competition. “The conditions were very good on Friday and Saturday,” he said. “The wind was a bit challenging on Sunday because when it’s windy it can blow the clay targets around a bit. “But otherwise it was a very good weekend.”
